  • cleaning products and other indoor pollutants

  • the number of people using the space

  • how much fresh outdoor air reaches the building

Does Air Conditioning Provide Fresh Air?

comfortably cool but poorly ventilated.

How Do I Know If My Office Has Poor Ventilation?

Can CO₂ Monitoring Help Identify Poor Office Ventilation?

Yes — in suitable spaces.

HSE recommends taking several readings during occupied periods rather than relying on a single snapshot. Measurements should be considered alongside occupancy and the type of ventilation being used.

Monitor placement matters too.

HSE recommends positioning monitors around head height and away from windows, doors, air-supply openings and directly beside people, as these locations can distort readings.

For offices and meeting rooms, this can help facilities teams understand whether ventilation performance changes as occupancy rises.

Modern Demand-Controlled Ventilation (DCV) can take this idea further by adjusting airflow in response to changing demand.


Is Opening the Windows Enough?

Sometimes natural ventilation is perfectly appropriate.

Opening windows, doors and vents can increase the amount of outdoor air entering a workplace. HSE even notes that airing a poorly ventilated room for short periods can help as a temporary measure while longer-term improvements are considered.

But relying entirely on windows isn't suitable for every commercial building.

Its effectiveness can change depending on:

  • the building layout

  • weather conditions

  • window position

  • room depth

  • occupancy

  • whether windows can actually be opened

  • noise or outdoor conditions

Larger commercial buildings may therefore require mechanical ventilation to provide more controlled and consistent airflow.


Good Ventilation Isn't Simply “More Air”

This is an important point.

Good ventilation isn't about running every fan at maximum speed all day.

A meeting room may have very high demand for an hour and almost none afterwards.
